The Gyllenstiernska Krapperup Foundation has generously donated funds to create an artists in residence programme. In the programme art will interpret technological research and advanced equipment in ways that can provide an altered understanding and a new insight into the activities of MAX IV and the researchers’ work there.
Bringing together art and technical research is nothing new but very rare in a Swedish context. The famous particle physics laboratory at CERN in Switzerland has ongoing artists in residence programmes and nowadays is not only a technical facility but also a well-established laboratory for artistic collaboration in which researchers and artists work together in a mutual exchange.
The idea is that this type of artist residency is not only an artist interpreting a researcher’s work but also that the researcher through the artistic process and the work of art gains a new perspective on their activities.
A working group consisting of staff from MAX IV, Malmö Academy of Music, Inter Art Center, Skissernas Museum and LU’s Cultural Forum for Art and Science has worked on the call for applications, which in the first stage is aimed at Nordic artists.
The selected artist will meet researchers at MAX IV and be offered various workspaces within Lund University. The public will be invited to discussions and shows during the process and when the work of art is finished. In the second stage, we will conduct a larger international call for applications. We look forward with excitement to these new experiences of interplay between art and science within Lund University!
