Shannon Jackson / Researcher in residency
We are thrilled to host the acclaimed performing arts scholar from Berkeley, Shannon Jackson, for three weeks in November in collaboration with Malmö Theatre Academy and Art as Forum (Copenhagen University).
The residency will consist of a series of public and academic activities both in Malmö at IAC and in Copenhagen at Art as Forum.

30 November 2021, 17.00–19.00: Time-based Art and Ecological Time.
Forum lectures#10: Shannon Jackson at Art as Forum in Copenhagen. Karen Blixensvej 1, 21.1.21 Media and video art of the last twenty years coincided with the harrowing expansion of climate degradation. This lecture gathers a range of artists and artworks to chronicle the central themes of ecologically-responsive time-based media art practice of the last twenty years. It finds artists using old and new aesthetic resources – from pre-2000 techniques of abstract documentary and information visualization to more recent strategies drawing on data management, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality – to address a range of environmental issues. Whether tracking the racially disparate effects of environmental dumping or recalling a feminist understanding of environmental care, artists track the links between ecological degradation and historic systems of inequity. Time-based media art thus becomes a particularly potent vehicle for addressing the most urgent crisis of our time.

Text seminar at IAC with approx. 20 doctoral students and researchers from the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts, LU (Malmö) and Art as Forum (Copenhagen). In the Master Class, Shannon Jackson, uses the climate performance of Sun and Sea: Marina at the Venice Biennial (and shown now at Malmö Konsthall until Nov 14th) as a springboard, to consider how a range of artistic techniques struggle to address a range of affects and systems related to ecological crisis and climate disaster. Emily Apter’s essay, “Planetary Dysphoria,” also serves as an intertext for tracking and naming these affects.
