‘Come and listen to recorded conversations with free groups in Malmö and help me try to construct the bold, unruly, playful, irreverent, tender and ineffective with only commercial toys to hand.’

- Emma Bexell

Welcome to ‘Bygga Fri Scenkonst i Lego’ - a performance and installation which, after its premiere in the Triangeln shopping centre in June, is now being shown at IAC as part of the Malmö Gallery Weekend. Here you are invited to build your own free group - out of Lego!

Unfortunately, there are only a few pieces that are a bit worn out and they seem to be getting fewer and fewer...

The artistic director of Bombina Bombast, Emma Bexell, set herself the challenge of mapping the independent performing arts scene in the city and then recreating it with square blocks of plastic. It went so-so, but perhaps it's not the product that counts. In a cultural climate that increasingly favours effective storytelling and quantifiable results, playing with Lego attempts to highlight the conflict between soft ideas and hard bricks, to find the playful in the political and vice versa.
