The sound installation is bilingual (Portuguese / English). Duration: ca. 30 min (loop).
During an ethnographic fieldwork trip conducted in June in Brazil in two cities 4000 kilometers apart, Rio de Janeiro (Iury’s hometown) and Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas, Iury carried out interviews with the eldest generation of her aunts and uncles in order to continue the investigation she has been carrying on along her doctoral studies on ancestrality, migration and the ever-present effects of colonization in Brazilian contemporary society. This sound installation is the final phase of her ongoing PhD project entitled On Ancestrality and Regeneration: Performing Decolonial Journeys.
In this phase, Iury is exploring a specific dimension of her maternal grandmother’s migration journey which has thus far been overlooked: the experience of those of her children who were left behind after she fled to the suburbs of Brazil’s then capital city Rio de Janeiro in 1945, amidst the Second World War.
Having sought and received validation funds from LU Innovation, Iury was able to join forces with Danish composer and sound artist Kristian Hverring and Brazilian set designer Mariana Ribas Coimbra to design a space composed by a number voices and sounds of different bodies of water. The ambient sounds of Brazil play a key role in contextually framing the persons being interviewed. As interludes, the sound of the ocean waves and the rush of the river dissolve the speaking voices, engulfing them in the rushing white noise of water in motion.
This project aims at developing an innovative method entitled Ancestral Dramaturgies that contributes to the expansion of the concept of socially engaged arts, a practice that is collaborative, often participatory, and involves people and their personal experiences as mediums of artistic research.
The doctoral studies of Iury are conducted at the Malmö Theatre Academy, and also within the framework of Lund University's Graduate School Agenda 2030.
