Artistic performance and lecture: Sustainability at a Crossroads
Sustainability at a Crossroads is an event where two formats are merged into one: a theatre performance and a university lecture in one. The doctoral students, Iury and Juan, invite you to participate in a space of creation and reflection about people-place relations and sustainability, inspired by the afro-Brazilian offerings to the religious figure Exu.
The event will also feature a capoeira performance by Ana Paz and Nicholas Torretta from the Capoeira Angola community in Malmö.
Doctoral students Juan Antonio Samper (Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies) and Iury Salustiano Trojaborg (Malmö Theatre Academy) invite you to participate in an outdoor performance lecture titled Sustainaiblity at a Crossroads.
The performance is based on their common understanding of carrego colonial (colonial burden), a concept elaborated on by Brazilian pedagogue Luiz Rufino in his work Pedagogia das Encruzilhadas (Pedagogy of the Crossroads). Sustainability at a Crossroads focuses on ancestral and rooted people-place relations and knowledge-practices of afro-descendant communities in Brazil by the production of an ebó (offer, sacrifice) to the religious figure Exu.
The ebó, in this case, are bean seeds that are planted and watered in a cross-shaped soil where we, along with the audience members, write the poem Debaixo D´Água, Coberta de Terra (Underwater, Covered in Earth) and sing ancestral songs to pay homage the different deities (orishas) who represent the various elements of Nature in certain Afro-Brazilian cosmogonies.
The event will also feature a capoeira performance by Ana Paz and Nicholas Torretta from the Capoeira Angola community in Malmö.
Participants are not required to prepare anything in advance. All that is required is curiosity and love for mother earth.

The event is part of Sustainability Week 2026, which runs between 13-18 April. Sustainability Week is an annual event in Lund organised as a joint venture by Lund University and Lund municipality. The week serves as a platform for bringing together ideas, raising public awareness and for inspiring sustainable change.
