Inter Arts Center (IAC) and the Danish Composers’ Society offer a residency programme at IAC for Danish composers and sound based artists who work with experimental music and/or sound based art. This Swedish-Danish collaboration is aimed at practitioners focused on artistic or scientific development through sonic and musical experimentation and exploration.

The residency allows an individual artist or a group of artists to create their own project with sound as the focal point in the interdisciplinary environment at IAC. In connection to the residency, the invited person or group can share their discoveries and results in a public session, taking the form of a seminar or presentation.

Applicants may apply for a residency from 2 to 4 weeks in a yearly application round. Artists in residency become an integrated part of an exceptional artistic environment, and can access the wide variety of technical facilities, studios and project space at IAC, as well as technical assistance. The residency includes a fixed travel and accommodation stipend (or contribution) of 5.000 DKK and a weekly working stipend of 5.000 DKK, for other residency/productions costs or as an artist fee.

WHO CAN APPLY?

Composers and sound based artists residing in Denmark or with a significant connection to the Danish music scene can apply for the Make Sound Residency.

HOW TO APPLY

As an applicant you need to: 

• describe the preliminary project title, the project idea, the motivation for doing the project, what investigative strategies might be used (how you plan to approach any specific questions, problems or ideas raised in the project), and what technological equipment and assistance might be needed in max 2 pages (A4). Please specify the planned length of the residency, from 2 to 4 weeks, and see available venues and equipment on the IAC website.
• submit a CV/biography in max 2 pages (A4).
• submit a presentation of the applicant’s practice in max 2 pages (A4).
• submit links or files with 2–3 examples of existing works.

FOCUS

The assessment will focus on the extent to which the project idea and the research design can help to develop new formats and approaches to experimental music as well as sound-based art or inform other fields of knowledge related to sonic production. We value all qualifying attempts to exceed and challenge the boundaries of what we normally associate with contemporary music and sound based art, as well as other practice-oriented inquiries within the area of music and sound.

JOINT PURPOSE

IAC works to support artists’ technical competencies and development of new knowledge and has as one of its missions to collaborate with partners who can benefit research and development within the artistic field. The Danish Composer Society (DSC) provides strategic activities to initiate more opportunities to conduct free artistic development and research and work for more funding for this area. DSC wants to position creative artistic work as an important field of knowledge in society.
