The new residency where artists meet scientists has taken place in June 2021 at ESS (European Spallation Source)! According to the jury, the seven selected artists have presented clear and relevant themes with a high artistic value. They also ask relevant questions about the present and the future, have a wealth of experience and an understanding of collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches. Furthermore, they can appropriate data and knowledge in new ways.

The jury selected seven artists from 47 applications to participate in the residency.

Ashley Middleton, from USA, based in London.

Curator, photography, installation, sculpture Ashley Middleton (b. 1985, USA) is an independent curator and visual artist, working in a range of media that includes photography, sculpture, and installation. Her projects are an expression of her ongoing research into the unconscious, its manifestation in human behavior, and how those behaviors produce, and alter, our physical and digital worlds. Her practice contemplates the notion of the self as a microcosm of the cosmos and the evolution of social connectivity in the age of rapid technological advancement. Middleton’s work uses philosophy, science, and empirical research to address the value of the body and its symbiotic relation to nature. Recent exhibitions include State Studio, Berlin; Gallery 46, London; and Subsidiary Projects, London. Awards include Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen Residency Scholarship (2021), Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant (2020), and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grant (2020). She has showcased work at Photoville in New York, Rencontres d’Arles in France, and Pingyao International Photography Festival in China. She is currently an artist in residence at Exposed Arts Projects in London, making work within the context of the program theme, ‘Intelligence Debiased.’

Dr. Jeannette Ginslov and Keith Lim, based in Denmark; Performance artists

Jeannette Ginslov is a media artist and researcher of Screendance and embodied technologies. She is a final year PhD candidate at London South Bank University, has an MSc in Screendance (Distinction) from Dundee University, and an MA in Choreography, Rhodes University. Ginslov is a Screendance maker, producer, workshop facilitator, curator and director of Screendance Africa (Pty) Ltd. She collaborates with Kozel, Guðjónsdóttir, Lim and Spikolon Screendance and AR projects Somatic Archiving (2017), Conspiracy Archives (2018), and Bodily Interfaces (2021-ongoing).

For over 15 years Keith Lim has dedicated his arts career to interactive art. Driven to connect live art with emerging technologies and the somatic experience. He creates interactive installations, physical and immersive theatre, and, recently, Augmented Reality apps. He is an interdisciplinary jack of all trades. Full stack experience maker. director, producer, production manager, lighting, video, technician, performer, thinker, teacher, doer. Master of dance, BA in Computer Science /Psychology

Ish Shehrawat, from India; Sound artist

Ish Shehrawat (Ish S) is a composer, sound artist, curator and musician from New Delhi (India). His primary fields of interests are sound art and installations, along with electro-acoustic and improvised music. Trained as a classical guitar player, he has produced various sound art installations, albums and composed music for independent short films, plays, performances, Video/ Media Art projects and contemporary dance recitals worldwide. He also curates the Sound Reasons Festival for sound art and experimental electronic music since 2012.

Ish S has collaborated with accelerator physicist Bryan Jones. 

Christine Kettaneh, from Lebanon; Animation and film maker

Christine Kettaneh is a Lebanese artist, holder of a MA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design and a MSc in Finance and Economics from the London School of Economics. Christine investigates the boundaries of language and systems in research-based works that are simultaneously sculptural and performative. She articulates language as both excavated material and excavation technique, her conceptual world being both source and subject.

Tim Bishop, from UK, based in Malmö; Sound artist

Tim Bishop is an artist and spatial audio designer based in Lund. His practice focuses on creating personal connections between artwork and audience, prompting individual and, often, emotional responses through sensory, evocative and highly aesthetic experiences. His work has been shown in Sweden, Norway, Romania, Russia and the UK, including performances at Lunds Konsthall; Dunkers kulturhus, Helsingborg; Inter Arts Center, Malmö; Galleri CC, Malmö; and Kulturhuset, Stockholm.

Tim Bishop has collaborated  with Benjamin Gentile. 

Axel Straschnoy, from Argentina, based in Finland

Visual artist and film maker Axel Straschnoy (born 1978) is a visual artist and filmmaker from Buenos Aires, based in Helsinki. His work deals with the social practices surrounding objects of knowledge. His long-term, research-focused projects span planetarium films, performances, film installations, editions, travelling exhibitions, museum collections and VR films. He is interested in expeditions: literal and metaphorical, scientific and artistic. Straschnoy has participated in the Le Pavillon residency at Palais de Tokyo and trained in Art History at the University of Buenos Aires.
