Bananskolen ('Banana School') is a Copenhagen-based and self-organised alternative school initiated by the Goodiepal & Pals collective in which everyone is a student and teacher at the same time. Goodiepal & Pals also known as GP&PLs is a refugee and human smuggling organisation in disguise, operating on the borders of the European Union. During their Make Sound residency Goodiepal and Bananskolen will create audio tracks in collaboration with artists from Malmö's sound and music scene and invite to workshops and concerts.

Remote Performance is an innovative project that will be conducted during the autumn of 2022 with the aim to create and explore a digital environment where people, regardless their ability, can be creative together from a distance and, also, perform for an audience. Using sensors, avatars and biological modulation of music data, conditions are created for the participants to communicate a state of consciousness, mind, and body. Remote Performance is part of a specialized initiative where Region Skåne and IAC wish to contribute to increased conditions for artistic creation through technical solutions, digital tools, and artistic method development.

Shirin Sabahi grew up in Tehran, studied Fine Arts at Malmö Art Academy and now lives in Berlin as an artist. Her practice casts artifacts and places as protagonists, tracing their contextualization and interpretation through time. The training is carried out in collaboration with the composer Erik Peters and will later be shared as an experience in a seminar at IAC. Freja and Erik will work together for 10 days in 4 different periods from June to October 2022.

A sound installation and performance work co-created by Canadian composer Rebecca Bruton and Icelandic composer and PhD student at Malmö Music Academy, Halla Steinunn Stefánsdóttir. Through 'a shimmering ornament of silt' the two musical creators attune to one another’s practices in experimental music, sound, and the interconnectedness of art and ecological systems. Together, they sift through ancient soil, sediment, and fossilization, and consider what the silt carries when it greets us in the present.

We are looking for visually impaired participants for a workshop of music and gestural expression! This workshop makes part of the PhD research done by classical guitarist Bertrand Chavarría-Aldrete at the Malmö Music Academy in Lund University. The workshop will be divided in two parts. A first part in which you will hear a series of sounds that you will associate with different materials and a second which will be a free expression clay workshop with music.

Exploring MaxMSP

Max is a visual programming software environment for creating interactive sound, graphics, video and computer works. On November 16-18, IAC in collaboration with Region Skåne will host public lectures open for anyone curious to see what Max can offer for creators wanting to explore software-based interactions and connections. The lectures offer both an introduction to various ways of working with Max as well as an opportunity to meet Max users from different areas. On Friday evening we conclude and celebrate with a concert by Collettivo_21!

"VARA VARD – anonymous material, phase 4" is the fourth phase of a longer research project initiated by the artistic duo Brewer & Blennow. The project derives from an interest in the oral storytelling tradition of folk tales, where the specific points of departure have been investigating a sounding and listening body, magic(k), gathering around a common activity, rest and a lack of an author. This time around, the artists will start the process by looking further into what an anonymous material is.

This project is a collaboration between the two feminist, Copenhagen-based collectives, SØNTH and Crush String collective and the Danish sound artist Cecilie Sadolin. During their Make Sound residency at IAC the artists will create a tribute to the programming language "COBOL" which was invented by Grace Hopper in the 1960s. The aim is to create alternative notations/scores based on "COBOL"'s program structure and to create an improvised concert based on these.

Teater Insite will explore how digital formats such as virtual reality and 3D sound can be used for interactive storytelling and to create immersive, site-specific, interactive and sensory encounters. During their Region Skåne residency, they will work together with Tim Bishop and visit the Multisensory Experience Lab, part of Aalborg University in Copenhagen. The aim is to share their experiences in the form of an interactive experience, followed by an open talk.

In this performance Absurdum is investigating the coequally creative and destructive forces in humans through different stories of death. We follow Thelma to Hades after she has driven off the cliff in the Grand Canyon. We follow the creation of plastic bags, from ancient dead organisms, through oil and polymer, and on to convenient but overrated tools of mass suicide.

‘Three Shields’ is a piece that explores ways of recontextualizing the technology of voice synthesis, by bringing it into a physical media producing it acoustic and mechanically. The piece takes form as three special designed gongs, each of which are mechanically controlled, tempered, and tuned to produce a somewhat “human voice”.

Mylla is a musical performance piece that addresses our emotional, economic and vital relationship with the earth and how it is changing. Joe Kessler is currently contributing to the development of comics with new design techniques. Inspired by risography, he colors his images in different layers with the help of a computer, and then has them offset printed with selected colors. The residency is hosted by K3, the Department of Arts, Culture and Communication.

This year’s Intonal programme at IAC is supported by and curated in collaboration with the partners in a Nordic network for sound-based residencies, where both IAC and Inkonst are members. The other network partners are Notam (Oslo), EMS (Stockholm), Danish Composer’s Society (Denmark) and Rupert (Vilnius). And in addition to this we continue our long-term collaboration with the Ars Nova Ensemble and their festival SOUND SPACES. As a response to the pandemic, we have decided and prioritized only to have live acts this year. We will have seven acousmatic concerts (in the Red Room) and three live performances (in the Black Room).

A group exhibition and seminar at IAC as the final event of the "Artists in conversation with ESS (residency) programme", showcasing some of the output from all the artists and scholars who have collaborated in this programme. The opening event is open to the public and will include a short introduction and an artist-guided tour of the exhibition. The seminar will focus more on the process of the collaboration between all artists and scientists, and even reflect on future perspectives and how to further develop the field of arts and science.

Together with Tim Bishop, SPECT scenkonst will work i. a. on ideas and techniques for sound installations.  The project will explore three ideas in particular: senses in the dark, headphone encounters and staged sociograms. At the IAC, they will create a space using various tools such as spatial sound devices, lighting technology, biometric sensors, texts and scenographic elements. The experiences from the project will end up in a podcast.

Together with dancer and choreographer Robin Jonsson, Bombina Bombast will explore how rehearsals can work remotely in a shared live virtual environment. The aim of the collaboration is to develop a system that enables dancers, choreographers, actors and directors to rehearse remotely embodied as avatars. Lessons from the project will be taught in a public seminar.

THE VOID is a journey in Virtual Reality, where live music and a 360 degrees movie is mixed into an intimate and interactive concert-performance, where all your senses will be activated. For 20 years Johannes Nästesjö has worked as a professional double bass player and teacher in the genres of modern jazz, improvised and contemporary music. He currently conducts artistic research at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen. Johannes will demonstrate how the music evolves and becomes a part of a personal and independent musical language; hence, the importance of studying, learning, and then transforming and personalizing already existing techniques from contemporary music.

The work-in-progress project Game Changers’ – is a workshop in electro-composition and choreographed audience interaction in 3 parts. During January and February Lundgren & Pettersson will explore the 2nd and 3rd parts. Lundgren & Pettersson has during the last term in 2021 explored and done an electric soundscape in collaboration with the Malmö based musician & singer Cecilia Nordlund. Now Lundgren & Pettersson will continue the pre-study and investigate group affiliation and exclusion with a focus on the viewer's attitude and what governs the narrative and group dynamics in a live work through workshops at IAC.
Family life – recomposed / Make Sound Residency

Family life, and children in general are commonly associated with chaos and unsolicited noise. This project aims at recording the everyday life in a family through a network of 16 microphones set in an apartment located on a pedestrian street, in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, in a family of four. The technique used will be adapted to the place, capturing its acoustics in ways that won’t allow to dissociate the place from the people nor from objects used.

'Radical Listening Sessions' will be collective research and workshopping around several themes contained within Jenny Gräf Sheppard’s PhD 'Communicating Vessels: re-defining agency through sounding'. Each theme will be explored through experiments with electronics, movement, readings and discussion. The outcome of each session will be a document, sound piece or video that is a reflection of the research. It may take the form of an art piece or of a documentation.
