Irene Kaltenborn, The Mother Age. Film still.

From the barren coastline of Finnmark to the deep forests of Finland, “The Mother Age” by Irene Kaltenborn, graduate of the Malmö Art Academy, is an artistic film project on the search for clues to shed light on an ancient theory reaching back to the dawn of humanity. By bridging documentary moments and performative staging, the artist wants to challenge the idea that the knife was the first tool made by man and embarks on a journey to find traces of the carrying bag. As she takes us between the edge of the forest and the forest itself, we meet people who transport us back in time in the hope of finding lost knowledge in soil and folklore that could turn history upside down.

"The Mother Age" will have its world premiere at CPH:DOX on 14 March at 16:30.

Irene Margrethe Kaltenborn's cinematic world revolves around the poetic and the political, raising philosophical and existential questions that she illuminates. She is interested in how the eye and gaze of the camera can create alternative ways of seeing the world, and how we can interact with the non-humans around us through a deeper understanding and empathy. Her cinematic works is based on thorough research and a deep engagement with history, phenomena, or contemporary discourses, often exploring the relationship between humans and non-human animals. Through a personal, painterly, and poetic imagery she straddles the line between documentary and fiction.
