‘While matter is figured’ is a site-specific installation created by Jenny Käll, Malena Norlin and Maria Westmar and is a part of an ongoing collaboration between the three artist. For five days they will work together in the the space of Inter Art Center, in a /limit/ state where the formulated and non-formulated is performed and explored with both failure and success as possible results. It is a physical investigation of the chosen materials – their different phases and the transitions between them – that will take shape, be interpreted and understood through (their) bodily knowledge. Norlin, Käll och Westmar work together with something which can also be understood as a material exploration of language itself as well as they perform a linguistic dialogue in relation to the materials, the sculptures and the installation.

This process evokes questions, formulations emerge and are here recurred with help from the theoretical physicist and feminist Karen Barad: “Language matters. Discourse matters. Culture matters. There is an important sense in which the only thing that does not seem to matter anymore is matter. […] How did language come to be more trustworthy than matter? Why are language and culture granted their own agency and historicity while matter is figured as passive and immutable, or at best inherits a potential for change derivatively from lanugage and culture?” *

Motion is manifested in the artistic process but also in the experience of looking. Jenny Käll, Maria Westmar and Malena Norlin choose to see their installation and the sculptures which it contains of, not as immutable objects, but as operators with whom the visiting bodies act with. Meaning emerges in relation to and in the presence of, the installation which, as a whole, includes information and formulates questions. Thus, the exhibition space can be looked upon as a vibrating surface where an ongoing and a never-ending dialogue occurs /relationally/. Working with material based art can be seen as an attempt to /per/form a universal communication. They believe it has the ability to create an openness as the material’s physical properties speaks to our bodily experience. The weight of a stone, the water’s ability to flow or the rustle of a plastic bag – we all have bodily knowledge of the different materials and their qualities which is something that Westmar, Norlin and Käll want to make visible and stimulate.

Malena Norlin is working with sculpture, installation and text. She has a master in fine art from Konstfack Univerity 2015. Before art school she’s been studying architecture at KTH and received her master in 2013. Malena is living in Stockholm.

Jenny Käll is working with installation, sculpture and video. She is currently studying her masters at Umeå Academy and has a BA from Konstfack University.

Maria Westmar is an art educator and artist working mainly with installation and text. She graduated from Konstfack University in Stockholm 2015 and has earlier and alongside her masters, been studying Women studies and Continental Philosophy. During 2016 Maria has been taking part in the course Skrivandets Förhandlingar at Konstfack University. She is now living in Malmö.

While matter is figured är en platsspecifik installation skapad av Malena Norlin, Jenny Käll och Maria Westmar och är en del av ett pågående samarbete mellan de tre konstnärerna.  Under fem dagar arbetar de tillsammans på plats i IAC’s Vita rum och befinner sig där i ett /gräns/tillstånd där det formulerade och det oformulerade samsas och utforskas med både misslyckandet och framgången som möjliga resultat. Det är en fysisk undersökning av de använda materialens olika stadier – tillblivelse och härmning – som tar form, tolkas och förstås utifrån den egna kroppsligheten.
Gemensamt arbetar de tre konstnärerna med något som kan förstås som ett materiellt undersökande av språket likväl som att de samlas i en språklig dialog kring materialen, skulpturerna och installationen. I processen framträder en formulering som här upprepas med hjälp av den teoretiska fysikern och feministen Karen Barad’s ord: ”Language matters. Discourse matters. Culture matters. Rörelsen är inte bara påtaglig i den skapande processen, i görandet av konsten, utan även i upplevelsen av den. Jenny Käll, Maria Westmar och Malena Norlin väljer att se sin installation och skulpturerna som den består av, inte som orörliga objekt, utan som aktörer med vilka de besökande kropparna agerar. Mening framträder i relation till och i närvaro av objekten, och installationen som helhet bär på information och inbegriper frågor. Utställningsrummet kan mot den bakgrunden förstås som en vibrerande yta där en aldrig sinande dialog pågår och uppstår relationellt.
Att arbeta med konst där materialet står i fokus kan ses som ett försök till en slags allmängiltig kommunikation där den materialbaserade konsten har en möjlighet att verka gränsöverskridande, menar de tre konstnärerna. Den har förmågan att skapa en öppenhet då materialets fysiska egenskaper talar till våra kroppsliga erfarenheter. En stens tyngd, vattnets förmåga att rinna eller prasslet av en plastpåse – vi har alla en kroppslig kunskap av de olika materialen och dess egenskaper vilket är något som de vill uppmuntra och stimulera till. Det är en annan typ av kommunikation än den språkliga. Det är en mer direkt fysiskhet som i likhet med ordet, är en stor och viktig del av den vardagliga kommunikationen, om än tystare.
