Artist presentation and feedback session relating to the new work (LICK KICK PICK) in the XR/location based VR for gallery genre.

Maren Dagny Juell is an artist working in moving image, installation and virtual reality. She is interested in the borders of subjectivity and individual autonomy. The works seek to embody an investigation into the reality of appearances, surfaces and definition of visual space aided by technology. She is interested in various forms of languages used to inform, command and instruct. Some work use video tutorials and online forums with instruction as a disseminator of knowledge for optimisation; especially chances of survival, optimisation and physical fitness. In these, the agent is giving advice and the subject trying to calibrate this to its own need. There is an element of pedagogy in this, a didactic discourse that fails to inform and thereby seek to examine gaps in our perception and attention.

Her Virtual Reality work is immersive experiences where a physical gallery space acts as an abstracted double of the Virtual Space. You navigate both spaces simultaneously. Maren seeks to activate the hardware and the engagement of VR with performative aspect, instructions and an institutional setting where the expectation of behaviours are established as rules/habits.

Maren is concerned with embodied cognition in institutional spaces. She questions how we relate to demands on the body and mind that are imposed on us in subtle ways, and expose methods of control and pressure you cannot see.

Maren Dagny Juell is based in Ski, Norway. She received her MA from Chelsea College of Art (London) and has exhibited widely, including solo shows at Atelier Nord Oslo, Trafo Kunsthall, Trøndelag Senter For Samtidskunst, Akershus Kunstnersenter, Podium Oslo and group shows at Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Stavanger Kunstmuseum and Riga Photography Biennial 2020 among others. Moving image works have been screened internationally including The Australian video Biennial in Melbourne.
