SUMMARY:Disputation | Jörgen Dahlqvist – In Dialogue with Society: Democ
 ratic Engagement through Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Contact: amanda.pettersson@thm.lu.se\n\nJörgen Dahlqvist’s d
octoral project explores how theatre can contribute to democratic engageme
nt. The starting point was artistic probes investigating aspects of democr
acy: participation\, deliberation and inclusion. The probes resulted in th
ree productions presented at theatre institutions in Sweden. In "Skapa Dem
okrati" (Creating Democracy)\, participation was promoted by encouraging t
he audience members to create a democracy together. In "Öva Demokrati" (P
racticing Democracy)\, deliberation was in focus. The performance allowed
the audience to deliberate on suggestions for strengthening Swedish Democr
acy. In "Monument"\, different strategies were used to promote inclusion i
n society. The project started with the idea that monuments say something
about society. The research has resulted in strategies for inclusion and a
novel theatre format\, the conversational theatre\, which encourages parti
cipation and deliberation. These outcomes could provide the theatre with m
ethods to be in dialogue with society. In Dialogue with Society: Democratic
