This concert concludes a focus on Pan Sonic, who are also featured in the acousmatic diffusion section of the festival, alongside performances by Yann Coppier and Jakob Riis. For this occasion, I will be diffusing the full album A. Originally named Panasonic, the Finnish duo had to change their name after a lawsuit from the electronics company, with the missing “A” becoming the title of the record.
A alternates between abstract, textural pieces that recall electroacoustic experimentation of the classical avant-garde and rhythmic tracks closer to glitch and minimal techno. This duality, to me, is key to connecting contemporary classical composition with underground electronic music. Pan Sonic’s influence extends beyond the experimental scene. Curious members of the audience are invited to listen to the works of Italian composer Fausto Romitelli, who referenced their work directly in his sketches.
In his notes for Trash TV Trance, Romitelli describes a guitar effect modeled after a Pan Sonic sound, which can be heard in the first track, Maa. According to his sketches, he imagines a “Pan Sonic-type” noise created by an electric guitar’s jack, producing a characteristic interference sound. In An Index of Metals, he allegedly incorporates several sampled elements from their CDs. A direct resemblance is clear, for example, in Romitelli’s first Intermezzo with the track Johto 1 from the Pan Sonic album.
Alessandro Perini's artistic production ranges from instrumental and electronic music to audiovisual and light-based works, net-art, land-art and vibration-based works, recently focusing on custom-built machines. A recent CD issued by KAIROS, “The Expanded Body”, gathers some of his solo and chamber music works. Based in Malmö, he’s a founding member of Hertzbreakerz, a group curating – among other events – SOUND SPACES, dedicated to new and recent instrumental music. Since few years he's been collaborating with INTONAL and Inter Arts Center, curating the acousmatic program at IAC. He currently teaches Composition at the Conservatory of Mantua (Italy).
